Community Outreach 2022 Winter Project: Ending Period Poverty Initiative

Each year, the League completes a community project in the fall, winter and spring. The community project slate allows the League the flexibility to provide ad hoc, timely support to address critical community programs or issues that arise throughout the year. On Wednesday, March 30, 2022, the Women LEAD Committee hosted the 10 Women LEAD scholarship finalists at the Junior League of Dallas Headquarters for their annual speech competition. Every year, senior girls from three local high schools, Thomas Jefferson, South Oak Cliff and Emmett J. Conrad, are invited to participate in the scholarship competition. The first prize winner receives $15,000 in scholarship money. Read more.

In 1922, ten women organized a group of civic-minded young ladies to give their time, talent and energy to improve the lives of Dallas’ growing population. Offering their resources and time to support hospital patients and individuals with disabilities, the group leveraged the power of women as trained volunteers, giving rise to JLD – also referred to as Dallas Junior League previously – joining the nationwide Junior League movement. In February 2022, on what would have been Juanita Craft’s 120th birthday, her successors on the City Council honored her with a proclamation designating Feb. 9 Juanita Craft Day. The proclamation accompanied an agenda item authorizing the city’s Office of Arts and Culture to accept a $176,000 donation from the League for the restoration of Craft’s home. Read more.
